The Grenadine Island of Union Island is joining the war on the Lion Fish, with the hosting of the first ever Lion Fish Derby next month (April).

The Union Island Easterval will include the Lion Fish Derby and Barbecue as part of efforts to control the venomous species in the waters around the Southern Grenadines, especially the Tobago Cays Marine Park.

Member of the Mayreau Regatta and Sporting Committee, Nancy Saul-Demers and Lesroy Noel are spearheading the project. Mrs. Saul-Demers said that the Lion Fish are eating machines which can destroy the fisheries stock.  Teams will leave the fisheries dock on Union Island at 6:00 a.m. and return by 3:00 p.m.

After the contest concludes and the catch has been weighed and measured, it will be cooked up by a local chef so that fishermen and others have a chance to sample the tasty treat.
